Depression and anxiety

Social Media And Depression?

Does social media lead to depression and anxiety?

Study says that Young adults who use seven to 11 social media platforms are three times more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety than those who use zero to two platforms.According to researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health (CRMTH).

For the study, the researchers sampled 1,787 U.S. adults ages 19 through 32, using an established depression assessment tool and questionnaires to determine social media use.

The questionnaires asked about 11 popular social media platforms: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Google Plus, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine, and LinkedIn.

Participants who used seven to 11 platforms had 3.1 times the odds of reporting higher levels of depressive symptoms than their counterparts who used zero to two platforms. Those who used the most platforms had 3.3 times the odds of high levels of anxiety symptoms than their peers who used the least number of platforms.

Researchers are not sure why heavy use of social media drives depression and anxiety, but they do have some theories.

For one, multitasking ”is known to be related to poor cognitive and mental health outcomes,” researchers said.

Also the “distinct set of unwritten rules, cultural assumptions and idiosyncrasies of each platform are increasingly difficult to navigate when the number of platforms used rises, which could lead to negative mood and emotions,” researchers said

Lastly, being on more platforms leads to a greater chance to commit a “social media faux pas,” which can cause repeated embarrassment.

I recently heard of a large number of suicides particularly due to heavy social media use mainly from the feeling of not being accepted,This could be in most cases cyber bullying but could also be a huge number of reasons.

use it wisely

I’m not here to bash social media because I honestly use it alot. Facebook and other platforms are really great for business and to stay in contact with friends and family but over use can lead to addiction.I’m not here to be your daddy, teacher, baby daddy or baby daddy’s daddy but I can tell you from experience that it can create a false sense of reality and an illusion of what real human interaction is or should be.

If you’re a social media person, that’s cool but beware,it could get complicated. If you like this article and others please subscribe to my blog and follow me on twitter .
